21st Century Literacy

Quote:

"Since we know that students don’t visually distinguish between content and advertising—they click on ads as just another content source"

Response:
I believe teachers should teach students that not everything is true that is posted online. Advertisements are not good for a content source. As a student I did not know that some things posted online were false information. Until about the 10th grade I didn’t know that Wikipedia was something for anyone to post on. Teachers need to aware their students that not everything is true.  If students know where to find the truth about information they could actually become more interested in a topic. It’s up to the teacher on helping students understand false and correct information.

  1. You are so right. People, especially young people, are taught to trust media sources and take what they say or post to be true without second guessing it. It is very important for students to be able to recognize reliable sources and still question even those.

  2. Absolutely. Most of the students are not aware of clicking one link may lead them to illegal and pornographic websites that are usually harmful to their healthy childhood development. Our job is to help them distinguish between useful and unreliable sources.

  3. This is definitely true. Teachers assign a project, but don't usually seem to check in on what websites are being used. This only leads to prolonged use of false information.

  4. Great job understanding an educator's role in media literacy.

  5. I feel like we made the same points in our blog. Educator's need to teach students how to tell between facts and false statements.
